So, here it is...
Monday, Jan 7th, 2008 12:55pm
We were 10
minutes from going away for a week-long vacation when our tenant,
Maurice Richard (one of Elizabeth's oldest friends who also works at
the Black Whale
here on City Island) runs down the driveway naked banging on our
window yelling
that his apartment over the garage (and luckily detached from our
house) is on fire!
In a few seconds, the exterior of our house was covered in
smoke.
Elizabeth ran out and was spraying the flames
shooting out of the window with the garden hose to
retard the spread of flames to the rest of the structure while I
backed both cars
out of the driveway to allow access for the firemen. I think
that within about three minutes, many
fire trucks, news cameras arrived on the scene, as well as many Public
Adjusters and other
people hoping to make money from the situation. Maurice's
face was covered in soot and he had
looked like a few scratches and a little peeling when the E.M.T.
Unit arrived.
After administering some oxygen to him, they rightfully insisted
on taking him to the Jacobi Hospital Emergency Room Burn
Unit. He is now "home" after a three-day stay with some
1st, 2nd and 3rd degree
burns on his face, arms shoulders and torso, but, doing well with a
great network of friends and staff
from the Black Whale Restaurant where he works. Due to
bandages on his hand, Maurice believes he'll
return to work in about a month. Special thanks to
Christine, Kelly and Billy for their extraordinary help!
He is presently residing in a temporary month-to-month cottage on Marine
St. He had been been assigned
a Visiting Nurse who was coming once a day to change bandages and
check up on him.
On the bad side of this, he has lost 95% of his possessions, except for
a table and small miscellaneous items thrown out the window by the
fireman. He is lucky to be alive! We did have a smoke/fire
detector there, but Maurice can't remember what woke him, but he
awake to see reflections of light glowing on his kitchen wall.
He left his bedroom finding a sizable fire in
progress by his living room window. Attempting to put it
out,
he threw water on it and it flared up in his face and
torso.
A prevelant theory is that origin of the fire may have been a defective
torchiere lamp It was not a windy day, so we were fortunate
that our house, a separate structure was not burned.
The Fire Marshall and various insurance emergency services
boarded up the 2nd floor and will return
to double and triple-check the fire's origins. Wet sheet rock in our
garage that was flooded by water
from fire hoses was removed Thursday by a water mitigation
specialist assigned to us.
They also cleaned up and will carted away any dangerous
debris thrown out the window during the fire.
There are five huge dehumdifiers running in the garage now off the
electricity in our house as the fire
department shut down all water, gas and electricity to the whole
structure.
We still are accessing damages to our garage and its contents.
A major lost was two grand piano actions
and some music and papers, including old Keyboard and Piano
Technician magazines.
Fortunately, most of my GIZMO keyboard gear and maybe 90% of my
music, books and other things
were safely covered or in plastic bins!
The insurance reimbursement process
should take one to three months.
Tom Malone and Chris Mc Ginnis have offered to loan some extra furniture, so, we'll be in
touch with them
to see what is needed and what is available. We certainly
will be kept busy
cleaning and restoring life and things for us and
Maurice.

The CD Recycling Center of America encourages you to keep your unwanted, damaged, and obsolete discs out of landfills and incinerators. The plastic used in
compact discs can be recycled into everyday items—including household products,
building materials, and auto parts—so think before you toss that demo CD you
listened to only once, or that CD-ROM press kit from last year. The CD Recycling
Center's free membership makes it easy to learn about disc recycling and to
start your own recycling campaign. They provide the logo, a plan, promotional
materials, and a place to send the discs. For more information and to become a

Swimmer Takes Plunge at North PoleMillions of Missing Birds, Vanishing in Plain Sight
Last week, the Audubon Society released a new report describing the sharp and startling population decline of some of the most familiar and common birds in America: several kinds of sparrows, the Northern bobwhite, the Eastern meadowlark, the common grackle and the common tern. The average decline of the 20 species in the Audubon Society’s report is 68 percent. Forty years ago, there were an estimated 31 million bobwhites. Now there are 5.5 million.
